Review

Pointless. Nokia’s attempt at YouTube+MySpace while making them money.

What is the site?

MOSH allows users to upload content for cellphones, of course with the cruft of another social network no one needs. Of course this is all user generated content, of course they don’t pay users for the content, of course your information is handed over to advertisers (or will be according to the prompt to ask more about your demographic).

So what things can you download for your phone?

  • Audio
  • Images
  • Videos
  • Documents (Apparently anything that doesn’t fall into other categories, like txt and xls)
  • Games/Apps (Listed separately to create an illusion of options)

So what is currently up there?

Crap, nothing of value, or copyright material. Basically YouTube with an ever lower average IQ. At the time of this writing there were ~9000 users, but looked like most created accounts to see the site, like me.

One of the Documents I checked out was just a copy of the Gutenberg Project’s transcription of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Definitely original content. Another was a spreadsheet of Movies a user owned.

Publishing Content

As of right now there is no reward for someone to publish content on the site, except for exposure with in the small community. As such there is no motivation for mobile developers to actually provide create applications to the site, except if they lack the resources to store it for free somewhere else. Given there is other options for users to deploy applications across a variety of mobile platforms AND make a living, I don’t see applications ever taking off here.

Media content has a similar fate in terms of original content, nothing of note, but a lot of copyright violations.

Summary

I’ll check back in on the site in a year or so, see if anything has drastically improved, but since it lacks rewards for creators, and a coherent understanding of the various mobile platforms, I have my doubts.
