Recently my ATI Radeon X1800XT died. Conveniently out of both manufacturer and CompUSA extended scamwarranty.

Looking for a cheap but powerful replacement I picked up an Nvidia 8600 GT.

A few months later, I’m starting up a weekly game session to play Neverwinter Night with a few friends. Well trying to run the game under my new card that displays a blank screen when starting the game. Very convenient. There is a few work a rounds;

  • Rolling back the Nvidia drivers
    • I’m very resistant to do this with Team Fortress 2 and Portal coming out in a few days.
  • Launching the client directly into an error then backing out.
    • This doesn’t allow me to login to the dungeon master client, thus making managing this
      weekly gaming session harder. Not that we need a continuous DM, but having the option to tweak things as we are playing would be appreciated.

I’ve opened a support ticket to Nvidia so hopefully they will log other person requesting this support. Of course, being a programmer, I know that the real problem could be on either end. Maybe Bioware is doing something rather obscure with the OpenGL api and putting the graphics card state machine in an uncommon position, but the much more likely issue is that Nvidia broke something in their OpenGL handling to support Vista’s OpenGL rendering which is now actually rendered via an emulation layer. Very frustrating…
